Our Neighbouring Countries

India is a vast pennisular country with its borders touching Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and China. India has good relations with all of them. We wish to maintain good relationship with our neighbouring countries.

Sri Lanka is an island situated in Indian Ocean and it is 80km away from us. It was earlier known as Ceylon. It attained independance in 1948. Colombo is its capital. It is a Buddhist country with 90% literacy rate. The quality of education is very good. On the eastern side of India lies Myanmar, foremerly known as Burma. It is also a Buddhist country which attained independence in 1948. Burmese is the local language and it has a military regime. Renowned leader, Aan Su Suchi has been trying to establish democracy but she has been kept under house arrest. Myanmar is an economically backward country where rice is the main crop. Ragoon is the capital city.

Bangladesh was earlier known as East Pakistan. It is the second largest Muslim country and was liberated from Pakistan in 1971. Dhaka is the capital city and Bengali is the main language here. The poem 'Amar sonar Bongla' written by Gurudev Ravindranath Tagore is the national anthem of this country. Shaikh Mujibar Rehaman was its first President.

Bhutan is also our neighboring country, towards eastern Himalayas. Bhutan is a very small country with China to its North and India to its South. Though it is an economically poor country, the land is very fertile. Thimpu is the capital city and King Jigme Singh Wangchung is the ruler. The country has both democratic and monarchial form of government. Bhuddhism is the major religion and rice is the main crop.

Nepal is another neighboring country in the Himalayas with Kathmandu as its capital city. Buddhism is the main religion and Nepali is the main language. Nepal also has a mixture of democracy and monarchial form of government. The country has dense forests. Tourism is the major business. The highest Himalayan peak, Mount EVerest is situated in Nepal. China is our biggest neighboring country. It is the highest populated country in the world. Its main language is Chinese and Beijing is its capital. It is a democratic country with communist government. It is also an agriculture based country and the main crops are rice, tea and sugarcane. It's a powerful and fast developing nation.
