About the Poet - Leigh Hunt James Henry Leigh Hunt was a famous poet and essayist of the nineteenth century. He wrote considerabale prose, edited several journals and essays and produced many poetic collections. As a poet, he was a firm liberal and always went ahead in expressing his views and beliefs in a straight manner. He published his famous poetic volume, 'The Story of Rimini' in 1816 and then another famous work 'Hero and Leander' in 1819. His other famous poetic works are 'The Feast of the Poets' (1814) and 'Foliage' (1818). He also published his autobiography in 1850.
Abou Ben Adhem Summary
Man is the noblest creation of God and the poem Abou Ben Adhem stands as the best testimony to this statement. Abou Ben Adhem was a noble man who lovedd God's creations that is all men and women. Service to man was the only religion of his life. Once he was visited he was one of them who truly worshipped God. When Abou did not find his name in the list of such persons, he was not disappointed as he knew that he loved his fellowmen. He implored the angel to write his name in the list of those who loved their fellowmen the most. The angel agreed and disappeared. Next night, the angel visited Abou and showed his name whom God had blessed was not only included in the list but topped the list. The poet gives a strong message that true worship of God is to love all mankind created by Him. To serve man is to serve God.
