About the Poem 'In the Bazaars of Hyderabad' is an early twentieth century English poem written by Sarojini Naidu. It was written as a part of the Swadeshi Movement. Sarojini Naidu wanted to convey the message that India is rich in tradition and the Indians don't need the foreign products. It is a vibrant and colourful poem describing the bazaars of Hyderabad. The poet has touched upon all the five senses of the human body to describe the splendour of the Indian traditional bazaar. The rich display of various merchandise in the bazaar depicts that Indians were rich and aristocratic in nature. The vendors weighing saffron, lentil and rice, the maidens grinding sandalwood, henna and spice, goldsmiths making garlands for both sad and happy occasions reflect the spirit of Indian life. Through this poem the poet wanted to present to the people of the country and the world the true colours of the Indian bazaar to make the Indians proud of what they have.
